Job Summary
Sorenson Communications, the leader in communication technologies and services for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, is seeking a responsible, capable and ambitious Data Engineer to join our growing team of data science and analytics experts. This person will be responsible for expanding and optimizing our data and data pipeline architecture, as well as optimizing data flow and collection for cross functional teams. The ideal candidate is an experienced data pipeline builder and data wrangler who enjoys creating optimized data systems that allow the company to focus on data-based decisions-making instead of where to find data and how to use the data. The Data Engineer will support our software developers, database architects, data analysts and data scientists on data initiatives and will ensure optimal data delivery architecture is consistent throughout ongoing projects. They must be self-directed and comfortable supporting the data needs of multiple teams, systems and products. The right candidate will be excited by the prospect of optimizing or even re-designing our company’s data architecture to support our next generation of products and data initiatives.

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain the data infrastructure required to transform OLTP data sources into usable data structures optimized for business intelligence and data science.
  • Design, implement, and maintain the next-generation data pipeline architecture using industry leading technologies.
  • In collaboration with IT and other business stakeholders, consolidate multiple complex data silos into a single enterprise data warehouse used for companywide data science and analytics.
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual process-es, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
  • Build analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into customer acquisition, operational efficiency, and other key business performance metrics.
  • Work with stakeholders including the Executive, Engineering, IT, and Data Science teams to as-sist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs.
  • Ensure compliance with security, data retention, and privacy policies to keep our data secure across multiple data centers and cloud vendors.
  • Create data tools for Data Science team members that assist them in building and optimizing our services.
  • Ensure proper data governance policies are followed by implementing, automating, and vali-dating access, Data Lineage, Quality checks, classification, etc.
  • Maintain current data pipelines to support business needs.
  • Work with data and analytics experts to strive for greater functionality in our data systems.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

Education
Minimum/Preferred Education Description
Minimum 4 Year / Bachelors Degree Computer Science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems or another quantitative field, or equivalent industry experience.

Experience
Minimum Years of Experience Description
5 prior experience as a Data Engineer or similar position.
1 experience with cloud data technologies (e.g., Snowflake, Azure Synapse, GCP) and industry best practices.
1 experiencing designing cloud-based data pipelines using a variety of tools (e.g., Azure data factory, Fivetran, Matillion, dbt).

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience using multiple programming languages (e.g., SQL, Scala, Spark, Python, PowerShell) to create reproducible, automated processes to create data infrastructure and products for business users.
  • Advanced SQL knowledge and query optimization.
  • Experience building, maintaining, and optimizing (balancing speed and cost) cloud data ware-houses.
  • Experience modeling data to be consumed by analysts and data scientist’s BI technology (such as Power BI, Tableau, Excel, Looker)
  • Deep knowledge of OLAP vs OLTP database architectures
  • Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Experience working with API’s and command line interface tools to automate data extraction, loading, and transformation.
  • Experience working with business users to develop automated quality assurance error checks.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to apply analytical and critical thinking to solve complex problems.
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrate outstanding ethics, integrity and judgment.
  • Exceptional written communication skills and verbal or ASL communication skills, with specific ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely and defend their validity.
  • Interact with others in a professional and mature manner.
  • The applicant should also have experience using the following technologies and tools:
  • Advanced understanding modern data warehouse practices
  • Experience with relational SQL and NoSQL databases, including MS SQL Server.
  • Experience with data pipeline and orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow).
  • Experience with object-oriented/object function scripting languages: C#, Python, Java, etc.
  • Prior experience with MS Dynamics 365 and Azure technologies is preferred.

  • Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Must be available for on-call work.
  • May require 5-10% Travel.
  • Must have regular and predictable attendance.
  • Must possess a positive attitude, be a team player, have good interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work across company departments to build consensus.
  • This position has access to highly confidential, sensitive information relating to the employees and customers of Sorenson Communications. It is essential that applicant possess the requisite integrity to maintain the information in strictest confidence.
  • Must be able to sit/ stand for a long period in an office environment.
  • Must possess dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, tools, and to handle other computer components.
  • May lift and transport moderately heavy objects, such as computers and peripherals.
